McAfee SiteAdvisor

McAfee SiteAdvisor is a great extension which provides protection from adware, viruses, spyware, malware, spam, online scams etc. It’s “safety rating” system tests websites and categorizes them as green(safe to use), yellow(caution) and red(unsafe; do not use). There is also the occasional “grey” site(not tested yet).

McAfee has a free version - the basic one which is available as a plug-in for Firefox. It includes:

  • Safe searching - Do any search in Google, Yahoo or MSN, and SiteAdvisor ratings appear against the sites.

See example :-

  • Safe browsing :- Based on the sites visited, the SiteAdvisor button in the status bar changes to show red, yellow, green, or (the occasional) grey.

See example :-

  • Detailed results about any website; which includes e-mail tests, download tests, online affliations and annoyances(popup etc.)

The best part about it is that the ratings for websites are not based on McAfee tests alone; after you become a reviewer, you can make your own opinions too, about websites. Although there are some sites which are mistakenly rated as red or yellow; that is, maybe they had affliations with red sites in the past but they don’t have it now. The test results for www.newgrounds.com , for example. See it here - http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/newgrounds.com

Despite the rare mistake in rating websites and of the sort, SiteAdvisor still contributes a lot towards staying safe online for me. Come on, you all should check it out too - www.siteadvisor.com

5 out 5 stars!
